Final Developments:

Initially, I wanted to focus on the portrayal of light being a source of comfort and safety in the city at night. I aimed to provide imagery that promoted the idea that light that shines down and through the city of Newcastle can create a sense of security in contrast to the typical view that it is dangerous to go out in the dark, However, since researching artists such as Hopper, K.T Parker and Amy Friend my ideas have developed to showing that Lighting, whether it be artificial or natural can change the atmosphere of any art or photography piece. I am going to use various physical methods to enhance that idea. For example, I want to surround my photographs in pinholes so that when I create my installation using box frames and battery powered lights, it will glow though and create this sense of safety comfort within the light. I also decided that for this particular theme, Home comfort would be a lot more suitable. This allows me to experiment with photographs informed by Hopper, looking out the window whilst the warmth of the light from within draws us into the scene. It also allows me to include typical ideas of comfort i.e homely items and scenes we would often see in our houses. This could include photographs of family enjoying a meal together underneath a kitchen light and pinholes surrounding them to insinuate this atmospheric idea of comfort with being surrounded by lights.

I also changed from using day time photographs of the city and digitally enhancing them to be darker, to using real dark photographs from within and around the house. This allows me to capture muc more appropriate photos with the correct aura and sense that the light is seeping in to or out of the house. One other development I decided to keep from my research and experiments is the use of different tools for my pinholes, at first I started with just a needle which was effective in creating smaller holes to shine the light through, however there were a few errors I had to overcome to ensure my photographs informed the viewer what I really wanted to imply. This involved me needing to use different sized pins and round tools such as pencils, board pins, paper clips and pens to create a diverse range of pinholes. This overall made my photographs look a lot more effective and gave it a more appealing look. I also had some confrontations whilst experimenting with the colour of light to use. This is because at first I felt that different coloured lights changed the atmosphere of the overall look. To overcome the overly bright white light I experimented with using coloured tissue to diffuse the light and fit each photograph individually, Orange for photographs of candles to imply warmth and blue light to imply artificially created light and the liveliness of the streets.
