Northern Comfort
My final piece consists of a triptych of physically manipulated photographs (pinhole method) that I used a lot during my experimentation. I decided on using Amy Friends technique and process within my project, building on the idea how light can change the atmosphere of a photograph. Exploring this concept has allowed me to physically manipulate the photographs and enhance what light was already there. This is very effective as using box frames and artificial lighting to illuminate these pinholes creates a sense of comfort and peace whilst also making some photographs look lively and emotive. My photography styles range from Brassai's night photography to Emma Simcock-Tooth, with photo's ranging from vividly lit street photography to low lit portraites and highly contrasted images that look a lot like Hopper's work, reminding me of home comfort and safety. I used one photograph that was inspired by Tooth that featured my model standing in the pitch black with a slightly lit up face. I digitally enhanced this photograph to create a thicker contrast and take away any grey areas. This allowed me to pin areas coming away from the lit up face and make it look like half of the face was lit up creating a darker atmosphere. I believe having a triptych installation made the piece look evenly balanced and spread out to allow me to have a range of photographs that all in their own way prove that light can effect the mood and tone of a photograph. I used thick black frames to create my installation as it adds to the outer darkness of the photographs, whilst using bright artificial lighting inside to shine through and create depth and contrast to the photographs. I believe my techniques and process have been informed by my artist research, such as the pinhole process Amy Friend uses within her work and the heavily contrasted photographs inspired by Hopper and Tooth allowed me to create a selection of pieces that really show the comfort that light provides within our homes. Home Comforts really came together in my final piece as it shined brightly and drew the viewers in to what I can happily call a comforting atmosphere caused by the brightly shining lights.
However, I belive I could have experimented much deeper digitally and experiment with the end outcome to see if there were any other methods for creating a better final piece in terms of presentation and photography. My photographs were well enhanced digitally, however I believe I could have experimented with creating pinhole- like art digitally as a aternative. I could have also experimented with different type of lighting, however, the lighting I ended up using was very bright and effective at illuminating the areas needed.
