My intentions for this project:

The use of artificial and natural light in photography:

What I intend to explore throughout this project is how natural and artificial lighting effects the atmosphere of my photographs. I want to capture the feeling of warmth and comfort in the city and in the streets as well as inside public areas such as café’s and houses. I want to communicate that artificial light creates a sense of safety as it emits from the windows of buildings and streets, drawing us in.

Light has a great impact on the way we view places, we see warmer tones lights in public places as more cosy and safe whereas cooler tones lights may be seen as more lively and awake. I intend to work with the different views of the lighting and places you see in a city  and in your home, day and night. I want to capture an atmospheric photograph with vivid lighting either emitting from within your home, a buildings window or from streetlights to show that the city and your home is actually warm and safe even during the darker hours of the day. I want it to look peaceful and beautiful to represent that the city and streets are always welcoming and awake. I am going to experiment with methods of enhancement physically after taking my photographs to develop the photo and see if I can enhance the life of the colours and sentiment of the view, extending the idea of peace and warmth in a place we wouldn’t expect it to be and in order to emphasise the use of natural and artificial lighting I am going to use a mixture of lighting methods, digital and physical.

My Primary sources will be photo references of buildings to help me visualise the different potential areas to photograph including the buildings and windows where I could shoot and to help me create an image that accurately captures the light and how it connects to warmth within your home and street. I will have to photograph different areas around the city, streets and my home, including photographs looking into my home from outside, and various photographs including artificial lighting shining onto the face of my model. This will help me visually plan the best possible places to represent the life and warmth of light and how it changes the atmosphere of my photographs.

In order to achieve effective photographs I will have to use a DSLR with the appropriate settings available: Aperture to achieve the depth I want, ISO: to get a clear photograph in the dark and I will also have to use a tripod to make sure my photographs are steady and allow me to position it in better areas without blurring or distortion. I will also need some wooden box frames to hold my pictures so that I can experiment with artificial light shining through them.
