Contrast, light and dark.

Contrast, light and dark.

This photograph was taken at around 6PM. ISO 400. The natural lighting in this photograph surrounds the model and captures her in a warm bubble of safety. It brightens the area up largely and gives the model a silhouette that really stands out. I like the way this photograph looks as it symbolises to me the way that light can keep you safe. This could help me show my original idea that light, both natural and artificial can create a feeling of safety and liveliness.

Natural light with a cloudy overcast

Natural light with a cloudy overcast

5PM. ISO 200. In this photo, the lighting comes from above and illuminates the whole street, enhancing the shadows in the photo. The clouds act as a natural diffuser which creates less contrast between the dark and light of the photo making it seem smoother and flatter than if I were to use a flash. This makes the street look a lot more vintage as it washes out the colours and makes it look a lot older than it actually is.

Day time photographs of the city.

5PM. ISO 400. This photograph looks very deep and open due to the natural light illuminating each area of the city. This photograph looks a lot livelier and all around a lot more positive. Since the clouds acted as a natural diffuser the light was not too harsh and didn't make any of the building reflect in a unnatural way which makes the buildings recogniseable still and creates a clearer image.

Enhancing Light

Enhancing Light

Light can be used to brighten up a city and make colours much more vivid, just like in this photograph. This makes the city seem more peaceful and safe because in contrast to a dark, colourless photograph, the light brightens up the area and enhances the beauty of the city making it a much safer place to be.

Enhancing shadows

Enhancing shadows

As well as opening up streets and cities, lighting can make photographs a lot more sinister and creepy during the day time. This is because although the light is shining, the shadows are also harsher in daylight. The mood of a photo can be effected greatly by the type of natural light and since this is quite late when the lighting is low it creates a deeper contrast and enhances the shadows as well as the light making the photograph much more chilling and mysterious.

Lively at night

Lively at night

As we can see, due to the artificial lights glowing so vividly and filling the night time streets with a lively atmosphere, it feels a lot more awake and energized than in the day time photo. This proves that artificial light can signify liveliness and alertness in towns and cities, whilst Natural light tends to stick to the peaceful and calm side of the spectrum.

However, darkness can also create a scary atmosphere as if it were something trying to consume the light and endanger you. Just like above, we see the artificial light as a sign of life, it may not be natural but it signifies that we are awake and alive. Darkness is scary because it reminds us of evil rather than good and comforting thoughts we get under the protection of our lights.
